Villa Astoria

The waterfalls take their name from the village of Nemouta, located in the mountainous Ilia, at an altitude of 562 meters. The origin of this extraordinary name remains doubtful, as it is not clear whether it derives from an old Slavic place name, from an ancient Greek word related to pastures or from the years of Frankish rule in the Peloponnese.

In antiquity, centaurs were believed to have lived in the forested area that we now refer to as the Erymanthos Gorge, while in later years local legends consider it to be the home of fairies. The waterfalls are part of the system created by Erymanthos as it descends from the mountain of the same name to the Alpheus, with which it eventually joins. They end mainly in the Aboula gully and the Haratsari gorge.

Nemouta is located near the borders of Ilia, Arcadia and Achaia, 42 km from Pyrgos. If you are travelling from Athens, the best route is to take the provincial road Corinth-Tripoli and exit at Ancient Olympia. From there, it will take you another 2 hours or so to reach the village.
